What is Clouded Thoughts, and how did it come to be?

Clouded Thoughts came from me reflecting on my father, Robert, who passed almost 20 years ago. Even with the time that’s gone by, I remember the moments where I was his caregiver. He battled with many illnesses, but dementia affected him greatly.

My mother and I struggled during that time, but still somehow managed. I never really was able to express the challenges and difficulties of that time, because I just looked at it as part of the ups and downs of life. But I hope, through my artwork, that I can inspire others to make something beautiful from their difficult times.

Clouded Thoughts is a digital artwork series that reflects on the repetitive cycles of dementia.

What initially inspired you to grapple with dementia in your art?

Dementia is something that no one is truly prepared for. To see someone’s physical and mental health suffer is one of the hardest things to deal with in life. But through that time, you gain resilience and learn ways to cope. For me, artwork is my way of telling my story.

How has working on dementia-related art changed you?

Dementia showed me at a young age to value the moment and to not take anything for granted—especially memories. I hope my artwork becomes a moment that lives beyond my lifetime.

How has Clouded Thoughts been received?

This is my first piece of artwork dedicated to people and families battling with dementia so it means a lot to me. I hope to use this to spread awareness.

This work is dedicated to: To my father, Robert Hall Sr.
