Who is Melanie the Violinist, and how did she come to be?
I started playing violin in fourth grade. My parents invested time and resources toward my development, paying for private lessons and accessories. I emerged as a talented musician and was admitted into the advanced orchestra. I stopped when I got to high school because I didn’t think it was “cool.” It was the biggest regret of my life.
During the pandemic, I started playing again! With the support of grant funding from Awesome Foundation DC and The Puffin Foundation, Ltd., I launched Melanie the Violinist’s Black Musician Academy, a program designed to educate the community on the powerful impact of Black classical composers.
While picking up my violin again, I was inspired to share my gift in different settings, including senior living facilities and memory care centers. Since 2024, I have seen how a memory care patient can move from experiencing anger to joy after being invited to sing along with my performance. I have engaged in the mutual exchange of love by leading a call-and-response to familiar Motown (e.g., “I Just Called to Say I Love You” by Stevie Wonder) and classic rock tunes (e.g., “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond). I have seen older adults light up with vibrant energy while they dance to the beat and shake handheld instruments. Elders quickly rise to their feet with pride when they hear the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” I recall a resident thanking me for playing holiday music because it had not felt like Christmastime.
What inspired you to grapple with dementia?
Music transforms our overall well-being. I am dedicated to bringing the healing power of music to memory care centers. It is the core component of my work.
I strive to make a meaningful connection with every person in the audience and cherish the ability to share my passion.
