The Dementia Spring Foundation is pleased to announce our inaugural Dementia Arts Impact Award winner, Katie Mathews and her film Dark Moon!
Dark Moon is a short-film inspired by Katie’s experiences visiting her father in their hometown as he struggles with memory loss, his sense of self-worth, pride and independence. It is a deeply personal story about a father-daughter relationship – speaking to the challenges millions of families face when confronting a dementia diagnosis in an artistic and entertaining way.
Katie Mathews is a respected documentary filmmaker, currently completing her MFA in Film Studies at CUNY-Hunter College in New York City, and has amassed an award winning cast for Dark Moon, including Reed Birney who won a Tony for his performance in The Humans. Filming begins this winter and release is tentatively scheduled for late spring/summer 2022.
“We are so excited to work with Katie – a talented and compassionate artist,” said Founder and President Dr. Marc Rothman. “Her work focuses on dementia caregivers, both as partners on their journey and as the inspiration they are to so many of us.”
Through the Impact Award, Dementia Spring honors artists and arts organizations from across the creative spectrum. Awardees work with top experts in the dementia field to break new ground – artistically and clinically.
As an Impact Awardee, Katie receives a grant to advance her project, one-on-one mentorship from experts in aging, geriatrics and dementia, and support from the Dementia Spring production team.
