What is Old School Improv? How can improvisation be used in dementia care?
Old School Improv is a troupe of performers over the age of 50 who conduct interactive performances for seniors at residential facilities and community centers in Central Virginia. Created by the nonprofit organization Yes Balloon, the troupe performs regularly at senior communities, memory care facilities, and their own theater. We have recognized the special value of laughter and improvisational principles (play, living in the moment, acceptance, etc.) to those living with dementia.
In addition to performances, Old School Improv offers affordable improv training to dementia care staff and family caregivers, seniors in independent, assisted, and memory care facilities. Through this training, caregivers learn to understand how the concept of “Yes, AND” creates positive connections with others. Seniors are inspired to find new ways to use the power of laughter and fine-tuned communication skills to bring more joy into their interactions.
What inspired your troupe to grapple with dementia?
Several in our troupe, myself included, have been caregivers for family members and even friends with dementia. In our experiences, we witnessed caregivers and family members having challenges with meeting their loved ones where they are and finding ways to connect with joy. The improv training we experience teaches us basic and essential skills in supporting others and being good listeners and communicators. We were inspired to apply this knowledge both in an entertainment and workshop setting.
How has working on dementia-related art changed you?
Our art is performance, but it is also interactive. While we are driven to share what we know, I can say personally that working with those living with dementia has taught me even more. It has brought a greater understanding of aging and how our society is challenged to thoroughly support people as they get older, facing dementia or other illnesses.
The positive reactions of those who experience the shows and workshops—the joy, laughter, smiles, and, especially, the eye contact that says so much more than words possibly could—have invigorated the members of our troupe. We are constantly adapting and changing our approach, learning each and every time from these interactions. Our art is the ability to bring this laughter spontaneously while making meaningful connections.
How has Old School Improv been received?
The troupe’s performances have been received with smiles, laughter, and connections. As we perform “in the moment,” our audiences feel free to be there with us. The workshops bring so many “aha” moments, where people (caregivers and seniors) discover fun and effective new ways to connect with those around them.
