What is Challenges of Love and how did it come to be?

Challenges of Love is a series of photographs capturing the emotional and cognitive landscapes of memory loss. I was inspired to create this deeply personal exploration of Alzheimer’s disease after witnessing the progression of my grandmother Antonietta’s illness. This experience made me want to visualize the often invisible struggles faced by individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families, focusing on both the isolation and moments of connection.

Antonietta and her daughter, Luciana, my mother, didn’t have the best relationship. In this process, I observed Antonietta’s stubbornness and rigidity. She did not always accept my mother’s choices. I observed shifts in Antonietta’s personality, memories, and sense of self. I also observed Luciana and Antonietta expressing love to each other in different ways. No matter how much this illness succeeds in separating us from our loved ones, it also eliminates disagreement and hardship and brings us closer than before.

In creating this project, I’ve sought to balance artistic expression with a deep respect for the privacy of my family member, allowing them to retain their sense of personal space and dignity. The project is captured through a mix of digital and film photography, offering a layered and authentic portrayal that honors the subject’s intimacy and individuality.

What initially inspired you to grapple with dementia?

Dementia is a really challenging and sensitive topic, and my decision to explore it was deeply personal. My initial inspiration came from watching my grandmother’s gradual experience with dementia, witnessing the shifts in memory and identity that seemed both profound and heartbreaking. Moreover, I found myself observing my mother tirelessly taking care of her, and this pushed me to continue documenting the journey of our family.

In creating Challenges of Love, I sought to shed light on all that Antonietta had to face. I wanted to capture and honor these fragments, both the fading and the moments of clarity, as a way to better understand this journey for our family, especially for Luciana, but for all the community affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

How has working on dementia-related art changed you?

Working on dementia has profoundly influenced my outlook on art, aging, and life in general. This experience has deepened my understanding of the fragility of memory and the ways it shapes our perception of self and the world around us. You see this in the way that I’ve approached each image, aiming to convey a story. For example, in the image depicting a teapot, I’ve used multiple exposures to represent the way that everyday objects become so confusing for Antonietta. By including these themes, I am encouraging people to think about their loved ones and their experiences with memory and aging to promote empathy and awareness.

How has Challenges of Love been received?

Many audience members have expressed that Challenges of Love resonates with their experiences, bringing a sense of connection and understanding. Viewers have shared how the images evoke powerful emotions, capturing the complexities of living with dementia and the profound impact it has on both the individuals affected and their families.

I want to make clear that this project is not only focused on people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease but also on caregivers who often feel isolated in their journeys. I am glad that my work has somehow provided a platform for dialogue, allowing them to share their struggles and triumphs.

This work is dedicated to: To my mother and all the people who went through this journey. You are not alone.
