What are TuneLab and DanceSpace and how did they come to be?

TuneLab is a participatory group program that invites choir participants to explore melodies and harmonies that resonate with personal memories and emotions. This creative process stimulates cognitive functions and fosters community and belonging through shared musical expression.

DanceSpace serves as a sanctuary for movement exploration, offering diverse dance classes guided by experienced instructors. Through these sessions, participants discover new physical capabilities, express themselves nonverbally, and forge connections with peers in a supportive environment.

Both TuneLab and DanceSpace, from ArtsProud co-creators Jeth Leang and Peny Chan, are inspired by a deep-seated belief in the power of art to enrich the lives of seniors, particularly those facing dementia. We are a social enterprise working primarily in Malaysia, but aim to expand our influence globally in the future. The programs aim to empower participants by challenging aging stereotypes and promoting holistic well-being through physical activity, cognitive engagement, and social interaction.

The development of TuneLab and DanceSpace stems from a commitment to enhancing seniors’ quality of life through innovative arts-based interventions. These programs are designed to entertain, engage, and provide meaningful therapeutic benefits, fostering resilience and joy among participants.

Through projects like TuneLab and DanceSpace, we aim to shift perceptions, celebrate resilience, and highlight the profound humanity that persists even in the face of cognitive challenges.

What initially inspired you to grapple with dementia?

Our journey with dementia began from a deep-seated passion for using art as a transformative tool in the lives of vulnerable populations. Witnessing firsthand the impact of cognitive decline on seniors, we felt compelled to create interventions that could bring joy, connection, and cognitive stimulation to those affected by dementia. The initial inspiration stemmed from a desire to challenge the stigma surrounding dementia and to offer creative avenues for expression and engagement. Through projects like TuneLab and DanceSpace, we aim to shift perceptions, celebrate resilience, and highlight the profound humanity that persists even in the face of cognitive challenges.

How has working on dementia-related art changed you?

Working on projects related to dementia has profoundly influenced our artistic outlook and understanding of aging. It has expanded our appreciation for the therapeutic power of art in enhancing well-being and quality of life, particularly for seniors facing cognitive decline. This subject has become a pivotal part of our artistic journey, intertwining with our broader exploration of human experiences and societal issues. It has taught us to approach art—not just as a means of creative expression—but as a tool for social impact and healing. Through our work on dementia, we have come to see aging as a nuanced and multifaceted process deserving of empathy, respect, and innovative approaches to support dignity and resilience.

How has the work been received?

The work, particularly TuneLab and DanceSpace, has been warmly received by audiences, persons with dementia, and their caregivers alike. Participants have expressed profound joy and engagement during the sessions, noting how the activities stimulate their creativity and provide a sense of accomplishment. Caregivers have observed positive changes in mood and social interaction among seniors participating in these sessions. The interactive nature of the activities has fostered meaningful connections and moments of shared joy. Overall, the feedback highlights the effectiveness of art-based interventions in enhancing the well-being and quality of life for seniors with dementia, reinforcing the importance of such initiatives in our communities.
