What is the Memory Initiative at The Songs of Love Foundation, and how did it come to be?

The Songs of Love Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, creates one-of-a-kind, personalized songs that serve as portraits—written and recorded specifically for a child, teen, or older adult facing serious health challenges. The project grew from a simple belief: When someone feels frightened, isolated, or overwhelmed by illness, hearing their own name and life story reflected through music can restore joy, identity, and connection in a way words alone often can’t.

Through our Memory Initiative, we create personalized songs for older adults living with dementia or cognitive decline. In these cases, we intentionally draw on musical eras and styles that feel familiar and meaningful, pairing them with personal biographical details to support recognition, emotional grounding, and reconnection. For example, Joan, a woman living with dementia, has been among the recipients of a personalized Song of Love as part of the organization’s Memory Initiative. Her song was produced in a style similar to music she enjoys and informed by her and her loved ones.

Each song begins with an intake from the family or care team. We gather the recipient’s name, personality, favorite musical style, and the people, places, hobbies, and pets that shape their world. Our songwriters and song creators then craft original lyrics and a custom arrangement in the requested genre—pop, R&B, rock, children’s music, country, and more—so it truly sounds like “their song,” not a generic message. The track is produced with professional quality and delivered free of charge to the family, often becoming a source of comfort during treatment, a bright moment on hard days, and a lifelong keepsake.

The message we hope audiences take away is that every person is more than a diagnosis.

What inspired you to grapple with dementia?

Songs of Love was inspired to engage with dementia because our mission has always been about honoring the person behind the diagnosis through personalized songs.

After nearly 30 years of creating songs for children facing serious illness, we saw the same need for comfort, dignity, and connection in older adults. Thanks to today’s technology—paired with human storytelling—we can create personalized songs in the “back in the day” styles that often live strongest in memory (Big Band, Swing, Motown, Doo-Wop, classic pop). Our goal is simple: spark recognition and meaningful connection.

How has working on dementia-related art changed you?

Working with individuals living with dementia has profoundly deepened our understanding of both art and aging as a charitable foundation. It has shifted our perspective from creating music solely as entertainment or encouragement to recognizing it as a powerful tool for connection, identity, and dignity. We’ve seen how a single personalized song—especially in a musical style tied to someone’s earlier life—can cut through confusion and bring moments of clarity, recognition, and emotional presence.

This work has reinforced our belief that aging is not a loss of self, but a transformation that still deserves to be seen, heard, and honored. Within Songs of Love’s broader body of work, our dementia-focused efforts are a natural extension of our mission: using personalized music to reach people during life’s most vulnerable moments, whether at the beginning of life or later in its journey.

How have Songs of Love been received?

The response to our work has been deeply moving from both individuals living with dementia and the caregivers who support them. Caregivers often tell us that a personalized song unlocks moments they rarely get to witness—eye contact, singing along, tapping hands, smiling, or recalling a name or memory thought to be lost. For families, these moments are incredibly meaningful, offering connection and relief during an otherwise challenging journey.

For individuals with dementia, familiar musical styles from their youth paired with their own name and life details create a sense of recognition and comfort. Audiences consistently describe these songs as grounding, calming, and emotionally powerful. Many caregivers have shared that Songs of Love become cherished tools they return to again and again, helping restore dignity, joy, and a sense of self, if only for a few precious moments.
