What is Café for Care Partners and how did it come to be?

Café for Care Partners, from ARTZ Philadelphia, is a series of programs based in and around Philadelphia specifically for the care partners of people living with dementia (PLWD; usually family members but sometimes close friends playing the same role). The goal of the program is to provide engaging, stimulating experiences and relief from the daily grind. Activities include nature walks in local gardens and fun art-making projects. These programs provide a chance to find respite from the demands of care, attend to one’s own needs, and connect with other care partners.

Who initially inspired you to grapple with dementia?

My grandfather, Joseph Farrell, and a close family friend, who I have known since childhood both lived with dementia and ultimately died from it. This firsthand experience made it clear to me how important quality of life interventions are for those living with dementia. When I had the opportunity to apply to ARTZ Philadelphia, I was excited to combine something that was personally meaningful to me with my knowledge and passion for art.

How has working on dementia-related art changed you?

The narrative around dementia is so often only one of loss, but in ARTZ Philadelphia programs I have seen lots of laughter and joy. I have seen participants at all stages of their journey with dementia provide incredible insights into works of art. When you take the time to sit with an artwork and comment on what you see—to be open and playful—so much can be discovered. I think people can be intimidated by art at times, but ARTZ Philadelphia programs really emphasize its immediate human aspects

How has Café for Care Partners been received?

The best way to do this is to allow the participants of Café for Care Partners to speak for themselves: “Thank you again, more importantly, for reminding me to carve out time to do the things I love.” — Pat D., care partner

Here are a few of my favorite testimonials from Artz Philadelphia participants:

“Thank you for these reminders of the benefits of laughter. Life can be so serious at times, that we forget to look for the positives and the laughable moments. I greatly appreciated our virtual time together on Friday. It is good to connect with other caregivers, share our struggles and joys and offer support and celebrate the joys.” Pam N., care partner

“That was wonderful.  Laura’s garden is a joy.  Many things grow in her garden besides plants . . . including friends, critters, and community.  It was nice today to hear all the voices and stories.  Some laughter.  Memories.  A couple stories took me back many years to my mother’s garden – a small, but overflowing patch in Drexel Hill.  Haven’t thought about that in years.  Today, it felt as if I was there.  Priceless.” Peggy W., care partner
